Zeke's Guide: finding what you need in the UNH Library
Tips on successful searching
Most database searching is based on effectively combining search terms.
We use 'AND' and 'OR' to connect the terms or concepts we are searching for.
If you were searching for a topic like 'tattooing' you might search as follows:
(1) tattooing AND body piercing AND body art
By connecting these terms with AND you are saying you want to find records that contain ALL of the above terms.
This type of search will usually narrow the results for you.
(2) tattooing OR body piercing OR body art
By connecting these terms with OR you are saying you want to find records that contain at least ONE of the above terms.
This type of search will usually broaden or expand the results you get.
You may sometimes hear 'AND' and 'OR' referred to as Boolean operators.
Searching any periodical index successfully takes practice and experience.
